I love that I am currently on the "Tender Mercies" business model. The Lord has brought just the right amount of business to me, and I am so grateful. I have had the most beautiful and special clients this year!
Jocelyn is not only a client, but a beautiful friend. She has walked beside me in grief, and I have watched as through her grief she has turned to worship over and over again to heal her soul. I love how she loves Jesus and points me to Him. Her friendship has been such a gift!
I was thrilled to get to photograph her adorable family this fall. We had so much fun at her session, and the enthusiasm her little girls brought to the session made my heart swell. The cuteness level was at an all time high, and getting to capture both Jocelyn and Ben in their role as a parent was lovely. The chubby little hands holding their face and the little eyes inviting a daddy to sit for a moment are things that pass in a blink, but were frozen in time in pictures.
Sometimes it is difficult to see the beauty in our every day moments. We partner with our spouse in the business of raising our family - getting everyone to their activities, paying bills, making dinner, cleaning, work, and all the other demands on our time and energy. There are so many good and beautiful moments, but to us it just feels like routine, or, in some moments, the chaos of no routine!
One of the beautiful gifts of my job is that I get to freeze time for just a moment. I see the knowing glances between couples when their kids do something adorable. And the silly faces made that you see every day from your kids, but don't realize how quickly time moves on and that silly face will mature and move on with it. I get to preserve the beauty in the every day, and it is my absolute favorite thing!
I was excited when Bri and Tanner asked me to take their family pictures. They have been extending their love and home a bit extra these days, so they needed to update their pictures on their walls. It was such a fun session - even the teenagers said so! Ha!
The primary element of my job of a photographer is to capture life: life, just as we live it with the highs and the lows. Many times there is an element of both/and that comes hand in hand. Both joy and sorrow. Grief and celebration. Past and present.
It was my great joy to capture this moment in Jason and Heather's new life together.
In a very unique way, I have had the experience of photographing Heather's family for many years. I have photographed both the joy of a long awaited pregnancy, precious newborn babies, and the sorrow of an unexpected diagnosis, and intentionality of spending days together as a family, knowing those days were numbered.
We also have had the joy and sorrow of watching Jason's story through the years. Christy spoke into my life in such a valuable way, encouraging me to tell my story. Even though it was with great hesitation on my part, Christy pushed me to share at our church's women's conference the story of our infertility. It was messy, and there was ugly crying. But it was authentic and the women came around me is such a supportive way. In an absolute miracle, shortly after sharing at the women's conference, Anthony and I found out that we were expecting a baby. I will never know until eternity the impact the prayers of the women of the church had on our life, ultimately because of Christy's persistence. The Sunday that we announced our pregnancy was the same day that Christy mentioned she had some doctor's appointments that required additional follow up.
We have watched as both Heather & Luke, and Jason & Christy shared Jesus openly, authentically, and with outrageous intentionality throughout their cancer journey and walk through the valley of the shadow of death.
For years after Christy's death, we have been praying that God would provide for Jason and the kids, to bring a mother figure and a help-meet to fill the gaps. When we heard that Jason and Heather had started sitting together in church, we began to wonder what God's ultimate plan was, and continued to pray for both of them, and their children. And still do in this time of transition and both/and's.
Then, when the phone call came asking about pictures and wedding dates, I was thrilled to witness this new step in joining their lives together.
The wedding day was beautiful and heartfelt. It is so clear that Jason and Heather are well loved by family and friends. There were certainly tears shed, but also great celebration in knowing that God is still authoring a beautiful story.
I don't think I will ever get over the gift it is to share in the beautiful moment that a family is established. Saturday we shared in Ethan + Amy's joy as they tied the knot. Here is a little sneak peek for you!
When I met Lucas I loved his passion for cities. Anyone who has known me for more than 2 minutes knows I love traveling and the adventure of discovering new places. Lucas loves the city, so I got to show him a few of my favorite places in Omaha and we took a few pictures along the way.
Lucas, while you are waiting for your big adventure to New York City, I hope you take lots of opportunities to explore the places all around you. Visit new coffee shops and talk to the people around you. Find out what they know, the coolest places they have been, and the best of Omaha. Turn off phones and ear buds and listen to the sounds of the city and the people you meet. Some of the coolest things I have ever discovered while traveling were the people I met and their stories. Get lots of practice in discovering new places. And enjoy the city!
We have entered into a new stage of life. A stage that I sometimes refer to as "old." You know you are approaching this age when you start saying things like "I remember the day you were born" to people you still think of as young on the day they are getting married and beginning their own family.
I may or may not have said that on this beautiful day.
Trevin and Hailey had the most beautiful Nebraska spring day for their wedding. The weather could not have been more perfect and they were surrounded by so many friends and family members in the magical golden hour for their ceremony.
As I woke up and got ready for the special photo shoot these words were going through my head:
"All my life You have been faithful
All my life You have been so, so good.
With every breath that I am able
I will sing of the Goodness of God"
My business has had some special assignments lately. All that we have been through the past few years has prepared me in a different way to face moments of grief with the hope of the Goodness of God.
Walking beside Luke and Heather has been particularly special. I've had the unique opportunity to celebrate the blessing of their long awaited pregnancy, and their precious baby girl with a brave heart, and to rejoice again when their bundle of joy, their son, arrived safely.
When we were blessed with our surprise, Pip, Heather was one of the very first people we told. And when our tiny little bundle arrived, Heather brought us meals.
We have had the blessing of praying for each other in the moments of celebration and in the moments of calling out to the Lord for a miracle.
We rejoiced when Luke beat his first bout of cancer last year, but we are asking the Lord for healing once again. Luke and Heather have been an amazing example of looking to the hope of Jesus day by day. They have been such an encouragement and blessing to us, as well as a fantastic example of just faithfully walking the path that they have been called to.
Due to a recent diagnosis of stage 4 cancer that has spread into Luke's bones, we decided to do another photoshoot.
It is so interesting to me that often in life we strive for the "perfect pictures." You know the ones - where everyone is smiling and looking at the camera in perfectly matched outfits. Yet, often when we reminisce about the best moments in life, they are the simple ones. The daily life. The tattered blankies. Snuggling together for a few extra moments on the weekend. Dancing in the kitchen. Playing cars or Lego. Tea parties. Hundreds of books enjoyed together on a favorite chair.
Those are the best things.
As we wrapped up the photo shoot it was a beautiful moment when the exact song that I had woke up with that morning started playing on Luke's cancer playlist. So, here I share it with you. Also, please pray for my friends Luke and Heather and their sweet family.
The older I get, the more and more I realize that the best gifts in life are the people around us, our memories, and experiences with the ones we love.
Shanna and Hodge, like many couples in 2020/2021 had quite a time actually getting to their wedding day, but third time's a charm! Seriously, could their wedding be any more charming? I adored the vibe of their closest friends and family all coming together to celebrate. The Kimpton Cottonwood Hotel was a beautiful backdrop and the weather could not have been more perfect for a night out on the patio.
